TLS, two pages, 8.5 x 11, December 12, 1996. Letter to an admirer. In part: “Jeppson and I were both in the 509th Composite Group on Tinian…I never flew on a mission in which there was a fighter escort. In 1942–43 there were no fighters in the CBI that could accompany B-24s over enemy-held territory…The 509th flew practice missions in which we dropped conventional 500-lb and 1000-lb HE bombs on bypassed Japanese-held islands. In several combat missions against the main islands of Hinshu and Shikoku we dropped 10,000-lb HE Pumpkin bombs on selected targets, before, between, and after the two atomic attacks. Little or no fighter opposition was encountered on these missions and the AA fire was ineffective.” In very fine condition.
