Minor Chipping on Frame (~5 Feet Wide, Just over 3 Feet Tall). "Tyrolean Home Guard Returning Home in the War of 1809" is a monumental oil painting by Austrian artist Franz von Defregger. Measuring 55 x 40 inches, this work vividly depicts the return of Tyrolean militia fighters after their involvement in the 1809 uprising against Napoleonic forces.
Defregger, born in Tyrol in 1835, was deeply influenced by his homeland's history and culture. Educated at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, he became renowned for his genre and history paintings, particularly those illustrating the Tyrolean Rebellion.
In this painting, Defregger captures a moment of triumphant return, showcasing the militia's pride and the community's warm welcome.
