German military officer, revolutionist, and immigrant to the United States (1824–1902) who served as a Union major general. War-dated LS in German, signed “F. Sigel,” one page, lightly-lined, 7.75 x 10, September 2, 1861. Letter to C. F. W. Fischer. In full (translated): “Today I received your lines dated the 13th of last month. I consider it necessary that you confer personally with me or Major General Fremont about the matter you mentioned. Enclosed with this letter you will find a [railroad] pass. Please depart as soon as possible and call at my headquarters immediately upon your arrival.” The rail pass mentioned is stapled to the top left corner of the letter authorizing Fischer to travel from Detroit to St. Louis via Chicago. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and some scattered light soiling and creasing.
