Franz Scheyerer or Scheuerer or Scheyrer (Prague 1770/1762 -1839/1938 Vienna) Ruin of Weitenegg Castle and Weitenbache in Lower Austria, bottom left marked "Facciade des Obristlieutenant von Fürnbergischen. Hauptrechens zu Weideneck nächst der Donau", signed"von Scheuerer", oil on canvas, 103 x 140 cm, w/ frame, (Wo).€ 18.000 - 25.000 US $ 17.820 - 24.750 Provenance: Austrian private collection. Expert's Report: historical commentary Mag. Martin Bauer,12. May 2002. Like in the preceding painting, the theme of this topographically accurate view is not so much the once mighty Castle of Weitenegg, but the extensive timber industry complex, the work of Joseph Edler von Fürnbergs. Today, no traces of this vast complex remain, some of the buildings having been replaced at a later date by a paint factory. Weitenegg was situated at the confluence of the Weitenbach, used to transport logs, and the Danube, on which ships and rafts carried the timber on to Vienna. As a result the painting is busy with heavy goods traffic, horse-drawn carriages with wine barrels, horsemen, a coach, an ox-cart, and people walking along the embankment. In the background one can see farm-hands riding the tow horses used to pull the empty vessels upstream. matches lot 207. We would like to thank Landeshauptmann Erwin Pröll (Gov. of Lower Austria) for recomending these three paintings in a letter of the"Abteilung Kultur und Wissenschaft des Landes Niederösterreich" (letter on record).
