German painter (1880–1916) who was one of the principal figures of the Expressionist movement. Though he was among several notable artists whose names were on a list to be withdrawn from combat during World War I, he was killed by a grenade at the Battle of Verdun before the order could be carried out. ALS signed “F. Marc,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7 x 5.5, June 2, 1911. Letter to publisher Reinhard Piper in Munich. In part (translated): “Now you get your drawing from me - packed me the travel bug! In about three weeks I'll be back. I have drawn two drafts, the accusation is I'm so strange that I'm afraid to have not quite hit the 'tone' of the novel; choose what seems appropriate to you.
