German painter (1880–1916) who was one of the principal figures of the Expressionist movement. Though he was among several notable artists whose names were on a list to be withdrawn from combat during World War I, he was killed by a grenade at the Battle of Verdun before the order could be carried out. ALS signed “F. Marc,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7 x 5.5, June 2, 1911. Letter to publisher Reinhard Piper in Munich. In part (translated): “Now you get your drawing from me - packed me the travel bug! In about three weeks I'll be back. I have drawn two drafts, the accusation is I'm so strange that I'm afraid to have not quite hit the 'tone' of the novel; choose what seems appropriate to you. When I think of mechanical reproduction technology transfer to the Litografiestein. I'm curious about the protest onslaught. Not true, you Kandinsky's and my article print side by side? Here you go! Macke apparently still want to have to write, I find it rather foolish of him - he's too good!” In fine condition, with a central vertical fold, and pencil notations to bottom of first page.
