Hungarian Romantic-era composer and pianist (1811–1886) whose prowess at the keyboard earned him a cachet as perhaps the greatest virtuoso in the history of the instrument. Rare ALS in German, signed “F. Liszt,” one page, 4.25 x 7, April 24, 1881. In part (translated): “Hearty handshake for your beautiful poetic ‘Liszt Welcome’ in Berlin…” The recipient is unknown but it almost certainly was written to someone who had performed that day, with Liszt in attendance, at the Liszt Festival Concert in Berlin. Matted and framed with an original carte-de-visite bust portrait to an overall size of 13.5 x 13. Punch hole to blank portion of left edge, some scattered mild toning and a few small creases, otherwise fine condition.

The famed Hungarian composer had attended the well-received Liszt Festival Concert referenced here—an event he considered a great honor. Although in the city for only a short period, he undoubtedly found time to travel to Bayreuth in northern Bavaria to visit his daughter and son-in-law—German composer Richard Wagner. Liszt had initially disapproved of his daughter seeing Wagner, though the two men were friends, with the couple having been married for more than a decade by the time Liszt made this trip to Germany.
