Hungarian composer Franz Liszt and German novelist Joseph Viktor von Scheffel autograph letters signed. Two separate letters are addressed to Carl Feininger, the famous German violinist living in New York City who had written to Liszt and von Scheffel asking them to critique a symphonic musicical poem he had written. Liszt and von Scheffel write letters back to Feininger offering their opinions; lot includes full translation of both letters. Liszt's letter, dated 22 May 1871 from Weimar, Germany reads in part, ''…Your symphonic music poem 'from beginning to end' professes to be an intellectual masterpiece, very rich in ideas…Very Sincerely Yours, F. Liszt''. Two page letter measures 4.25'' x 7'', and includes two holograph envelopes, one of which is framed. Unframed envelope is split in two, with original seal still intact. Von Scheffel's letter, dated 21 January 1877 from Carlsruhe, Germany reads in part, ''I wish to convey my thanks for the forwarding of the songs from the 'Trompeter'…I have however the conviction, that you have created a charming piece of music and I greet you across the [ocean]. / J. Vic. v.Scheffel''. 8'' x 10.5'' letter is split into halves with some showthrough from writing on verso. A nice collection of letters with excellent association.
