ALS in French, signed “F. Liszt,” 5.25 x 8, March 18, 1854. Lengthy letter to a friend, in part (translated): "I am very distressed to have another favor to ask of you. My arrangements were made for this week. My copies were ready. My vacation requested and obtained. In one word, I was going to get on a train to visit you in Leipzig when suddenly, monsignors, that Duke of Gotha honors me and requests from me without delay to activate the last rehearsals for a new opera of which I will have to conduct the premier. The day after tomorrow, because tomorrow I have to turn the conduct Euryanthon here...Monsignor wishes to have the opera done in the next two weeks. As you can see it in a case of fake. And I hope that you would be kind enough to forgive me as I visit. Allow me however, not to give up our project of rehearsals in Leipzig—not that I don’t have the slightest idea to organize a concert piece...I do wish to hear two or three weeks of my work executed by your orchestra and to know your opinion on these productions. G. Gotze is scheduled to come here and sing one Lohengrin on the festival of Mme. the Grand Duchess. (April 8) I will give him the task to find out when it would be most convenient for you to have one arrived during the next month, and to write me one date that you have fixed so that I can wait for you all one embarrassment concerning me." In very good to fine condition, with light edge toning, short splits to the ends of the folds, and a small chip to the lower right corner of the last page.
