Franz Liszt. A musical giant of the nin
Franz Liszt. A musical giant of the nineteenth century: piano virtuoso, composer, conductor, writer, and teacher. Played an important role in recognition of Paganini, Chopin, Weber, Schumann, Beethoven, and particularly Richard Wagner, his son-in-law. Liszt left the concert stage in 1848 to devote his efforts to other musical activities. His piano students, many of whom he taught free, included the noted Moritz Rosenthal. A.L.S., Hanover, Apr. 28, 1879, 1 p., to Carl Reiss, Court Conductor at Kassel. In German. "Lack of time does not allow me to accept your kind invitation. From the 2nd to the 12th of May I am at Schloss Loo (Castle Holland) - and right after that, in Weimar. Again thanking you for your promotion and superb effectiveness regarding the musicians' meeting in Kassel, I always remain yours respectfully, Faithfully, F. Liszt." On double lettersheet, the second blank page mounted, not affecting written page. With original envelope in Liszt's hand, tipped to mounting page. Bearing original postage stamp (Scott #31), neatly cancelled. Both items very fine. With four pages of attribution and translation by Prof. Dr. G. Losch of Music Dept., Prussian State Library, Berlin, 1923, all contained in special folder. Liszt's work at this time involved preparation with Wagner of his Ring Cycle at Weimar, which was performed the year following this letter. An outstanding example of the musician described as"the man greater than his music" (Encyclopædia Britannica).
