Franz Hubmann made his breakthrough as an acclaimed photographer with his famous series ‘Café Hawelka’; his photographs fetch up to 4,000 Euros at international auctions

The present work is a later silver gelatin print by Franz Hubmann and depicts an artist’s portrait of his friends Hans Fruhmann, Josef Mikl, Arnulf Rainer, Wolfgang Hutter and Anton Lehmden assembled in the flat of Traudl Hutter. The picture is an impressive example of Hubmann’s interest in the documentation of ‘Viennese themes’.

The silver gelatin print shows light handling marks and the surface is affected by faint scratches and stains due to its age. The back side features a copyright stamp, reading ‘Copyright by FRANZ HUBMANN 1130 WIEN, WITTEGASSE 8, AUSTRIA’. Besides, there are a few illegible inscriptions written in pencil and pen. The image size is equal to the sheet size of 30.4 x 24 cm.

Franz Hubmann (1914-2007)

Franz Hubmann started his artistic career as a photographer and photojournalist at the age of 32, when he studied at the ‘Höhere Graphische Bundes-Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt’ in Vienna in 1946. In 1951, he met Karl Pawek, who was the publisher of the magazine ‘Austria International’. Several years of successful cooperation finally culminated in the founding of the magazine ‘magnum – die Zeitschrift für das moderne Leben’ in 1954. Hubmann was a master of the so-called ‘Life Photography’ and produced series of (artist’s) portraits, picture essays as well as a number of well-documented illustrated books. Parallel to his photographic career, Hubmann worked as a television producer in the 1960s and early 1970s. (cbo)
