Estes in Atlanta, Georgia concerning blueprints for planned buildings at Warm Springs. I spoke to Mr. Cook about our contemplated steam plant to heat the hotel and cottages, and possibly provide power. Would you be good enough to let me know the names of two or three high-class firsts in Atlanta to inspect the lay-out and give me plans and estimates.</B></I>" In 1921 Roosevelt contracted polio which left his legs mostly paralyzed. Refusing to bow to the possibility of spending the balance of his days in a wheelchair, he attempted numerous therapies. In 1924 he visited a spa in Warm Springs, Georgia where he became convinced of the benefits of hydrotherapy toward his rehabilitation. In 1926 he purchased the resort and established the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation and began the process of restoring the nineteenth century buildings into a modern medical facility. Although hydrotherapy never did restore F.D.R.'s ability to walk, he continued visiting the springs regularly for the remainder of his life. He died during his final visit to the spa on April 12, 1945. Very light soiling, else fine condition. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
