Manuscript DS as president, one page both sides, 10.75 x 15.5, March 5, 1856. Pierce issues a pardon to William D. Garner, “convicted of riot and sentenced to be imprisoned in the common jail, for a period of one year, and to pay a fine of one dollar: and whereas it has been made satisfactorily to appear to me that the prisoner is a fit subject for Executive clemency. Now, therefore, be it known that I, Franklin Pierce…do hereby grant unto him…a full and unconditional pardon.” Signed on the reverse by Pierce and countersigned by Secretary of State William Marcy. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, partial separations along a couple of folds, scattered toning, professional repair to central horizontal folds, and a few creases. The white seal is lightly toned, but intact. Full presidential pardons signed by Pierce are quite uncommon, as he issued only 142 during his term.
