Partly-printed vellum DS, signed “Franklin Pierce" as president and "Jeffer. Davis" as secretary of war, one page, 13 x 17, August 14, 1854. President Pierce appoints John McCleary as a "Brevet Second Lieutenant of Infantry in the service of the United States." Prominently signed at the conclusion by Pierce, and countersigned below by Davis. War Office seal remains affixed to the upper left. Handsomely matted and framed to an overall size of 19.5 x 23.25. In very good condition, with moderate overall soiling and toning, some staining near the edges, and a small hole above the word "States" at the top.
