Franklin Pierce Personallly Owned Book
Presentation Copy of the Memoir of General John Lamb to President Franklin Pierce. Isaac Q. Leake: Memoir of the Life and Times of General John Lamb. (Albany: Joel Munsell, 1850), 431 pages, first edition, original embossed covers, inscribed on the free front endpaper, 6" x 9". The inscription reads: "Memoir of the Life & Times of General John Lamb an Officer of the Revolution, Presented by his great-grandson, George Lamb Willard to His Excellency Franklin Pierce, President of the United States, New York City, May 18, 1853". Accompanied by an autograph letter of transmittal from Willard to Pierce. According to: Collecting Books and Pamphlets Signed by the Presidents, by Stephen Koschal, "Franklin Pierce had only a slight interest in books. He left behind a library of only 200 volumes, many of which are owned by descendants…Books that do appear on the market are ones that Pierce favored as gifts to friends and relatives". So this is surely an excellent edition to any collection of presidential owned books, and Pierce being a tough candidate in any field, makes it all the more impressive. The book is in fine condition; corners are bumped and rubbed; light rubbing on the head of the spine. The letter of transmittal is in very fine condition; usual fold lines are present; light overall toning.
