Franklin Pierce letter signed as Brigadier General in the United States Army, asking President James Polk for a position for one of his men. Letter, dated 14 December 1848 from Concord, reads in part, ''I take the liberty to commend to your favorable notice...Lieut. John McNab late of the 9th Regt. US Army. The sudden disbandment of the ten new Regiments has left him at this time without Employment, and it strikes me that the circumstances under which he entered the army - his valuable and distinguished services - his intelligence integrity and admirable qualifications...entitle him to some place in the service of the Government...'' Two page letter, front and verso, measures 7.5'' x 9.5''. Matted with a facsimile copy of the first page (the original of which can be seen through a small window on the verso) and portraits of Polk and Pierce to an overall size of 39.5'' x 27''.
