Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 14.75 x 17.75, July 24, 1856. President Pierce appoints S. Livingston Breese as "a Lieutenant in the Navy." Signed at the conclusion by President Pierce and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy James C. Dobbin. The orange Navy Department seal remains affixed over the bottom vignette. In very good to fine condition, with light toning, scattered staining, and small areas of vellum loss.

Samuel Livingston Breese was a lieutenant in command of the USS Crusader when the Civil War began; he was promoted to Lieut. Commander on July 16, 1862, and commanded the USS Quaker City of the South Atlantic blockading squadron in 1862-63 and the gunboat USS Ottawa in 1863-64; as commander of the Ottawa, he managed to repel a Confederate battery at Brown’s Landing.
