Dated 31 December 1855, partially-printed document appoints Jonathan Jenkins of California as Consul of the United States for the Port of Apia, Navigator's Islands in the Samoan Islands. Signed in black ink, ''Franklin Pierce''. Countersigned by ''W.L. Marcy'' as Secretary of State. Paper seal of the United States is affixed to the lower left corner. An oath has been handwritten to verso and signed by Jenkins and by the administering judge of the Circuit Court of the United States for the District of California. The green seal of the circuit court appears directly below the written oath. Single-page document measures 16'' x 12'', framed with an engraving of Pierce to an overall size of 30'' x 20''. Faint toning and folds, else near fine.
