Superlative, one-of-a-kind original political cartoon of a half-smiling FDR buried up to his chest in an avalanche of ballots, titled ‘Smiling Through,’ charcoal and ink on artist’s board, 13.5 x 15.75, boldly signed in fountain pen, “Franklin D. Roosevelt, Thursday, November 8, 1932, 22,813,786!” The cartoon, drawn for the election-night issue of Brooklyn Eagle by noted American artist John Cassel (1877–1960), is also signed in charcoal, “Jno. Cassel”; Cassel later presented the drawing with an ink inscription, “To Dr. Greenway, compliments of Jno. Cassel.” Suede matted and framed to an overall size of 22.5 x 25. In fine condition, with expected scattered light soiling, and a crease to lower right corner.
One of the most important elections in US history, FDR’s victory in 1932 marked the start of his unprecedented four terms as president. Here, in his own hand, Roosevelt acknowledges his victory and what would be the dawning of a new era. Roosevelt won the 1932 election in a landslide with 22.8 million votes—a total handwritten here by the new president—to incumbent president Herbert Hoover's 15.7 million. FDR carried 42 states to Hoover's six. The original recipient of this cartoon, Cornelius Greenway, was a prominent collector of signed photographs whose collection was dispersed by a fine arts auctioneer in 1971. Given the considerable visual appeal, provenance, and FDR’s specific and detailed reference to his history-changing presidential victory, this unique sketch is quite simply one of the finest signed images of Roosevelt ever to come to market. Oversized.
