Unusual DS, one page, 8.5 x 11.75, 1922. Woodrow Wilson Foundation certificate awarded to H. R. Upottke “a founder of the Woodrow Wilson Award created by public subscription in the year 1922 in recognition of the national and international services of Woodrow Wilson, twice president of the United States.” Signed at the bottom in ink by Roosevelt and four others. Matted and framed, with a Wilson Foundation letter, bearing a printed signature, and two unused contribution coupons, to an overall size of 17.75 x 32. A couple small tears to body, a few scattered light creases, one affecting tops of a couple letters of Roosevelt’s signature, and a few light spots, otherwise fine condition.

The Woodrow Wilson Foundation was an educational non-profit organization created in 1922 for the ‘perpetuation of Wilson's ideals’ through publications and support of research. FDR was named the national chairman, with local chairmen in each state. The initial goal of the foundation was to raise $1 million dollars, with men like Mr. Upottke ensuring that goal was fulfilled. In February, Roosevelt announced that more than $500,000 had already been raised within the first month of soliciting donations, with New York—the foundation’s home state—leading the way. Among the foundation’s goals was the establishment of the Woodrow Wilson Foundation Award for distinguished public service. Unique association between two American leaders. Oversized.
