Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 22.5 x 18.25, December 20, 1939. Roosevelt appoints Jerome C. Hunsaker “a member of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics for a term expiring five years. Signed at the conclusion by Roosevelt, and countersigned by Secretary of State Cordell Hull. Document has apparently been mounted, then framed to an overall size of 25.5 x 21. In very good condition, with a couple shades of overall toning, damp staining to lower left corner and edges, and a couple trivial wrinkles. The white wafer seal is toned, but intact. Hunsaker’s career spanned the very existence of the aerospace industry, from the beginnings of aeronautics to the exploration of space. After receiving this appointment to the NACA (the civilian government organization performing research into aviation) from FDR, Hunsaker went on to serve as the committee’s chairman from 1941 to 1956. Establishing the the Department of Aeronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he was considered one of the most influential people in the growth of the aeronautics industry. Interesting association between FDR, aeronautics, and the eventual space race.
