Signed book: D-Day Prayer. Limited private printing of 100 copies (this No. 37). Washington, D.C.: U. S. Government Printing Office, 1944. Hardcover with slipcase, 7.25 x 10.25, 16 pages. Signed at the top of the first free end page, “For Christmastide 1944 from Franklin D. Roosevelt,” with the recipient’s name having been professionally and virtually imperceptibly removed. In fine condition, with a touch of scattered light soiling to signed page and back pastedown, and scattered light soiling and foxing to covers and spine, as well as a bit of light surface loss to front cover. Slipcase exhibits some mild toning and sunning to spine.

Roosevelt purportedly wrote this prayer in his study during the night as the news of the June 6, 1944 D-Day invasion began to reach the White House. The colophon page following the text reads: “One hundred copies of this book have been printed for / President Franklin D. Roosevelt / at the U.S. Government Printing Office at Washington / December Nineteen hundred and forty-four / This copy is number” – Roosevelt has penned “37.” FDR, a noted book collector himself, gave this keepsake to select friends and relatives at Christmas—his last in the White House, as he died less than four months later.
