Unusual bound typescript of Gabriel Over the White House as published in New York by Farrar & Rinehart, 1933. Hardcover, 8.5 x 11, 282 pages. Signed on the title page in fountain pen, “Franklin D. Roosevelt.” Autographic condition: fine. Book condition: VG/None, with wear to spine. From the estate of screenwriter Carey Wilson, who wrote the screenplay for the film Gabriel Over the White House as well as Ben-Hur and Mutiny on the Bounty; several sections of the text are underlined or circled in pencil, likely done by Wilson. Financed by FDR supporter William Randolph Hearst and starring Walter Huston, Gabriel Over the White House was released just a few weeks after Roosevelt’s inauguration. Widely controversial and described as a propaganda piece, the film focuses on a president who turns America into a totalitarian state while also solving all of the nation’s problems. Roosevelt, who had even given suggestions to the filmmakers, saw the movie several times and said of it: ‘I think it is an intensely interesting picture and should do much to help.’
