TLS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, October 21, 1938. Letter to prominent lawyer and judge William Henry Hunt. In full: “Thank you for your courteous letter of October 11th, with reference to Mr. Maurice E. Harrison, of San Francisco, whom you endorse for appointment to the United States Supreme Court. I am glad to know of your high opinion of Mr. Harrison’s qualifications, and do want to assure you that your statements on his behalf will have every consideration when the question of filling the existing vacancy on the Court is taken up.” In fine condition. Roosevelt had grown frustrated with the Supreme Court’s striking down of his New Deal legislation, and a year earlier he had introduced an ultimately unsuccessful ‘court packing’ plan in an effort to sway the balance of the Court in his favor. In this instance he was evaluating candidates to fill the vacancy left after the death of Benjamin N. Cardozo, eventually nominating Felix Frankfurter at the beginning of 1939.
