TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Executive Mansion letterhead, December 15, 1932. Letter to Elmer J. Whitman, in full: “Thank you for that friendly letter expressing your pleasure over my election. You may be sure that I am always particularly glad to hear from my former friends of the Navy, although I was sorry to hear that you had had difficulty lately in finding employment. You may be sure that it gave me great pleasure to add my autograph to the picture of the U.S.S. Dyer. It took me back to old times.” A few chips and partial separations to edges, and some slight creasing, otherwise fine condition. In July of 1918, Assistant Secretary of the Navy FDR boarded the USS Dyer headed for Europe to get a first-hand glimpse at the Navy during wartime. Nothing of significance happened, but the trip made an impact on Roosevelt, as it was the only time he felt a part of the military.
