Extremely rare advance copy of Looking Forward by Franklin D. Roosevelt. NY: John Day Company, 1933. Softcover, 5 x 7.5, 279 pages. Accompanied by a custom blue cloth slipcase. This was one of 130 advance copies of the book sent out to reviewers on March 10, 1933; one of these was also sent to President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the White House, in which he discovered nine significant errors throughout the text. The John Day Company recalled them immediately, dispatching telegrams to the reviewers requesting that they ‘return without opening’ the packages they would receive in the mail that day. Of the 130 sent out, 120 were returned, and the errors were hand-corrected at the publishing house before being re-sent to the reviewers on March 15. This is one such example, with ink corrections on pages 36, 158, and 269, with page 141/142 being an entirely replaced page (original page cut out and replacement page laid in, not bound). Published in the wake of the Great Depression, the book was a compendium of Roosevelt’s ideas for the future, including chapters on subjects such as the reorganization of the government, taxation, agriculture, railroads, and judicial reform. Book condition: VG-/None, in VG+ custom-made slipcase.
