TLS as president, one page, 7 x 9, White House letterhead, February 7, 1939. Letter to Francis P. Murphy, Governor of New Hampshire. In full: “I regret very much that my present plans preclude acceptance of your cordial invitation to attend the national ski jumping trials to be held at Berlin on February twenty-fifth. I am planning to be on the high seas at that time, watching naval maneuvers and, incidentally, getting a little rest. I hope that the participants in the contest, the officials and the visitors enjoy the trials.” In fine condition, with an office stamp to top right and mounting remnants to reverse of second integral page. World War II was approaching on the horizon as the day before Roosevelt sent this letter British Prime Minister Chamberlain states in the House of Commons that any German attack on France will be automatically considered an attack on Britain. A month later Hitler expanded his empire pushing the US closer to war.
