Thought-provoking ANS as president signed “FDR,” on both sides of a 3.25 x 4 printed 1940 Christmas card, no date. Printed sentiment on the front of the card reads, “Christmas 1940, A Merry Christmas from The President and Mrs. Roosevelt.” On the front Roosevelt writes, in full: “Grace—Love from FDR (over),” continuing on the reverse, “If not the right size we can change it before we have it marked.” Curiously, Roosevelt crosses out “Mrs. Roosevelt,” on the front of the card. In fine condition. Accompanied by the original embossed transmittal envelope.

Grace Tully began working for the Democratic Party in 1928 and was assigned to Eleanor Roosevelt’s secretarial staff. After Franklin Roosevelt’s election as New York’s governor, she moved to Albany and became assistant to FDR’s personal secretary—a role in which she continued after FDR’s move to the White House. When the president’s secretary fell ill in 1941, it was Tully who was tapped to become Roosevelt’s new personal secretary. An affectionate message from the chief executive to a member of his inner circle.
