TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, Senate of the State of New York letterhead, February 3, 1911. Letter to Albert Schack. In full: “I beg to acknowledge your letter of January 30th. Bills have been, or will be introduced during this session, relating to suffrage and direct primaries. These bills will be referred to the Judiciary Committee in each House of the legislature. If you wish to send your articles you can address them to the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee in the Senate and Assembly.” Intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, a uniform shade of mild toning, scattered light edge creases, and offset of the letterhead in the blank bottom area from folding, otherwise fine condition.
In 1910, FDR won a seat in the New York State Senate—the only election in which he carried the Republican stronghold of Dutchess County, site of his Hyde Park home. As a freshman senator, he led a challenge to the Tammany bosses, winning wide renown for his efforts in the process. Among the legislation he introduced was that of protecting farmers and other items stressing conservation...as well as his work supporting a woman’s right to vote, as he notes here.
