The Chase National Bank check from the personal account of Aymar Johnson and/or Marian H. Johnson, 8.5 x 3, filled out and signed by Aymar Johnson, payable to Franklin D. Roosevelt for $500, January 23, 1937. Endorsed boldly on the reverse in fountain pen by President Roosevelt, with another hand adding above, "Pay to order of Georgia Warm Springs Foundation." In fine condition.

In 1924, FDR traveled to Warm Springs, Georgia, where he found that immersion in the area's mineral-rich warm water was one of the few things that provided relief from his polio-induced paralysis. Shortly thereafter he partnered with Basil O'Connor to purchase the resort and develop it into a world-class polio treatment center-the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation. To ensure that no one in need was ever turned away from his Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation, FDR established a Patients' Aid Fund to provide financial assistance. When that fund was depleted, the future president ordered the bills of those patients who could not afford the cost be sent directly to him for payment.
