TLS, one page, 5.75 x 7.25, Hidden Hollow letterhead, July 19, 1945. Letter to Mr. Crouch, in full: "Thank you very much for sending another issue of the Bedford Democrat. I am sending you a year's subscription to the Daily Word, which in its October issue will publish an article where I speak of the help that I received from reading the Daily Word at the time I was painting the late President's portrait." In fine condition.

Elizabeth Shoumatoff was commissioned to paint a portrait of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and started her work around noon on April 12, 1945. At lunch, Roosevelt complained of a headache and subsequently collapsed from a cerebral hemorrhage, dying later that day. Shoumatoff never finished the watercolor portrait, but she later painted a new, largely identical one based on memory. The Unfinished Portrait hangs at Roosevelt's retreat, the Little White House, in Warm Springs, Georgia, with its finished counterpart beside it.
