Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman (Universal, 1943). Lobby Card (11" X 14"). Lon Chaney claimed to play both monsters in this film, but he actually only played the Wolfman. Bela Lugosi played Frankenstein's monster -- a role he had declined in the first film because he would have no lines -- but a dozen years later, Lugosi had all of his dialogue cut, and he had to play the character as mute anyway. Originally, he was also supposed to be blind, a side effect of the brain transplant in the previous film, but producers cut that storyline in editing, leaving Lugosi with a lumbering, somnambulant gait, arms outstretched. The performance seems less ridiculous if Lugosi was attempting to convey the monster's loss of sight, but hereafter it became the trademark, and punchline, for the misnamed Frankenstein. This lobby card shows the transformation of the monsters, and it looks very clean except for some tanning, a slightly bent bottom-right corner, a crease mark on the right side and a tape-repaired tear on the left. Very Fine-.
