Frank Willard - Original Comic Strip Art for Mo
Frank Willard - Original Comic Strip Art for Moon Mullins Sunday dated 10-25-31 (Chicago Tribune, 1931). Frank Willard wasn't above using his fists when he thought he'd been slighted. Once, when he suspected that the gags he was coming up with for his strip The Outta Luck Club, were being rejected by King Features' management and then passed to George McManus for use in his Bringing Up Father, Willard attacked McManus and knocked him to the floor. Willard was fired from King, which may have been the smartest move he was ever forced to make. Fortunately for Willard, Captain Joe Patterson, head of the Chicago Tribune Syndicate, had been looking for someone to add a "tough guy" strip to his line-up, and, hearing about the Willard/McManus incident, felt that Willard was just the cartoonist to bring his vision to life. Thus was Moon Mullins born, making its debut on June 19, 1923. The strip eventually evolved into more of a domestic comedy, focusing on Moon's life in Mrs. Schmaltz's Boarding House, a format that saw the strip through nearly seven decades of syndication. The piece offered here, measuring approximately 17.75" x 23.5" overall, features Moon and many members of his supporting cast. A delightful Sunday page, this piece also includes the Kitty Higgins filler feature at the bottom. In very good condition, there is some evidence of light soiling in several spots, but this does little to detract from the overall eye-appeal of this early 1930s classic. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
