Frank Stack ("Foolbert Sturgeon") - New Adventures of Jesus #1 Cover Original Art (Rip Off Press, 1969). The Underground Comix movement more or less began with Robert Crumb's epochal Zap Comix #1 in 1967, however, there were a few earlier pioneers. Chief among them was Frank Stack. Part of the Austin crowd which included Gilbert "Freak Brothers" Sheldon and Jack "Jaxon" Jackson, Frank's Adventures of Jesus comic (actually a 14-page photocopied booklet handed out to friends in 1962) is considered to be the original forerunner to the whole Underground scene. His first post-Zap comic was The New Adventures of Jesus, published in 1969 by Rip Off Press under Frank's nom de plume, Foolbert Sturgeon. Stack's somewhat schizophrenic career consisted of doing scandalous, sacrilegious comic books like the Jesus series, and also working as a major Fine Artist and Professor of Art at the University of Missouri. This cover art measures approximately 6.5" x 9.5" and consists of two smaller pieces of art (the masthead and the oval illustration) mounted to another piece of board. The illustration has had some light color added, plus, there is some moderate white-out applied along the edges; overall, the piece is in Excellent condition. A signed copy of the original comic book is also included, and the two items have been attractively mounted side by side.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
