Frank Simon Herrmann (American, 1866-1942)

Herrmann was born in New York, New York, in 1866, and died in Long Branch, New Jersey, in 1942. An American who was best known in Germany where he spent most of his career, Herrmann created work that embraced Beaux-Arts academic realism to Impressionism to the New Objectivity.

He was a founding member of two important groups of the German avant-garde centered in Munich: the New Secession of German Artists and SEMA. He was closely associated with Paul Klee and Alfred Stieglitz.

After World War I, he returned to the United States but allowed his work only limited exposure there.
