Frank Sheridan (Cheyenne / Arapaho) Beaded Bugle
This is an original Cheyenne / Arapaho Frank Sheridan beaded hide old U.S. Cavalry bugle which was shown at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. This piece exhibits an old United States Army Cavalry brass bugle with silver like mouth piece which has been adorned by Cheyenne / Arapaho Frank Sheridan with a fantastic Indian tanned hide shoulder strap and other embellishments. The shoulder strap shows thick Indian tanned hide with a red ocher mineral pigment dye, backed in red Stroud wool clothe and has a fancy beaded red white heart seed beaded edge border. The strap itself shows bands of glass trade seed beadwork as well as solid brass trade tacks and green dyes, spiny oyster and abalone shell gorget concho beads, medicine bundles, and two brass thimbles. The straps have a bifurcated split end and various red dyed fringes. The bugle itself is wrapped with rope lace which is also dyed red and further adorned with a turned wood hanging tassel, braided sinew fringes, beaded drop with horsetail hair wrapped with fringed hide and beadwork as well as a Rocky Mountain Elk I.V.O.R.Y. molar tooth and parfleche hand effigy. The other end of the bugle is wrapped in Indian tanned hide with thin fringes, dyed red and adorned with banded glass trade seed beadwork. Frank Sheridan, Sr. is a noted Cheyenne a/ Arapaho artist who has received commissions by the Southwest Native American Conference, the University of Oklahoma Press, this piece from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and others. Frank’s beadwork and ledger art is highly collectible and has earned him many first place prizes such as 1st Place at the Santa Fe Indian Market.
