Financially ruined by spending his own funds to support the Union, Blair was Democratic candidate for Vice Pres. in 1868. Congressman, postwar Sen. From close of A.L.S., "I am very Respectfully Your friend...Washington City, Mar. 23, 1861" - about six weeks before he directed capture of the St. Louis Arsenal. "In the confused situation preceding outbreak of war he organized the Wide-Awakes, and was instrumental in saving Missouri and Kentucky for the Union..."--Boatner.
