Signed book: The Story of the Tower. First edition. NY: Horizon Press, 1956. Hardcover, 8.75 x 11.25, 130 pages. Signed and inscribed in white artist’s pencil on the first page, which also bears a printed Walt Whitman poem, “To Paul—with appreciation, Frank Lloyd Wright—/56” A sheet of New York Plaza hotel stationery is taped to the front pastedown, with a pencil inscription reading, “To Paul Grotz,” in an unknown hand. Autographic condition: fine. Book condition: VG-/None. Black cloth-covered boards with gilt titles; edges worn, with boards exposed at corners and spine-ends; spine slightly sunned; one small tear in cloth at center of spine; exterior soiled; minor discoloration to interior hinges from publisher’s glue. Paul Grotz, art director and managing editor of Architectural Forum (and an architect himself), collaborated with Wright on several projects throughout his career, including an exhibition of Wright’s work in Milan, issues of the Forum that were devoted to his work, and the formatting of this book. A lovely book with an interesting professional association.
