Frank Lloyd Wright Archive re: Parkwyn Village
Magnificent Frank Lloyd Wright Archive relating to Parkwyn Village.

Parkwyn Village in Kalamazoo, Michigan, was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1947 as a cooperative community, with the original plans showing 40 circular and semi-circular lots in a "biscuit cutter" layout. It was a cooperative founded by a group of young scientists employed at the Upjohn Company who prevailed upon Wright to design affordable houses they could build themselves.

This is a collection of Wright's original blueprints and plans for the houses in this community with related material. Comprises: (1) 14 blueprints, each approximately 36" x 25", titled: "House for Mr. and Mrs. Ward Greiner/Frank Lloyd Wright Architect", each approved in facsimile "F Ll W/Feb 16/50" in a box at the bottom. With two printed drawings, each 36" x 25", one showing the exterior of the house, the other showing the floor plan. The 16 prints are tattered at the edges but, overall, are in fine condition. The Greiner family has informed us that Mr. and Mrs. Greiner had asked that a few changes be made. Wright refused and the house was never built. (2) Three original pencil drawings (not in Wright's hand). each measuring approximately 48" x 36". In the lower right of the drawings, a portion measuring 5" x 0.5", probably containing Wright's handwritten approval, has been removed. Tears in the lower right. (3) An original plan, in pencil, by Clayton K. Cole, measuring 36.5" x 29.5". (4) Original pencil drawing, 29.5" x 17.5", of the 40 circular and semi-circular lots, showing the topography of the land. Folds, tear in the upper right. (5) Print titled "Parkwyn Village" of the 40 circular and semi-circular lots with dimensions of each lot, showing private driveways where planned, parks, and the named streets: Lorraine Avenue, Taliesin Drive, and Parkwyn Drive. Tears at upper right. (6) Another print, 23.5" x 18",also showing the 40 lots is heavily worn and folded, with tape repairs and tears. (7) Collection of 52 letters, drawings, invoices and notes relating to the Frank Lloyd Wright concrete textile blocks used to build the 40 homes, many on Upjohn Company graph paper. (8) 16 newspaper and magazine articles and photographs relating to Wright. (9) Two printed essays by Wright, "Harum-Scarum" (about the threat of Communism) and "We Want the Truth" (about America's future; prepared for delivery at Cooper Union in New York City, 1949). Each measures 17" x 17", folded to 8.5" x 8.5". The outside of each is titled: "A Taliesin Square-Paper/A Nonpolitical Voice from our Democratic Minority". Folds. In fine condition. (10) 1948-1949 greeting card from Taliesin, 9" x 6" when closed. With original envelope. (11) Printed card, 5" x 8", announcing "Parkwyn Village/A Planned Community," noting that "A professional landscape architect will lay out the community." Folds. (12) Poster, 8.5" x 11", announcing that Frank Lloyd Wright, "No. 1 Architectural Personality of Modern Times," will speak on Sunday, November 2 (1947), at Central High School, Kalamazoo, Michigan. Soiled, else fine. 97 items.
