Note: On inspection, the viewers eyes are immediately drawn to the central sparkling turquoise brilliance of the glacier fed Lake Louise which is cleverly framed between majesic old growth pines emenating from the grey rocky terrain, all of which is held within the confines of the steep medium and emerald green rocky cliffs on either side. Johnston captures both the majestic beauty of the Western Canadian wilderness and the unharnessed power of these rugged lands through the unique composition of the present work and the fact that the paint is so richly applied with a palet knife. Paintings of Lake Louise by Group of Seven members are very rare and this may be the only Canvas that Johnston painted of this subject.
