Frank Godwin - Original Comic Strip Art for Rus
Frank Godwin - Original Comic Strip Art for Rusty Riley Daily dated 10-31-55 (King Features Syndicate, 1955). Frank Godwin got his start in cartooning based in large part upon his friendship with James Montgomery Flagg (best known for his "Uncle Sam Wants YOU" poster art), who encouraged Godwin to contribute to the major humor magazines of the era. From that point, Godwin's career took off. His first strip, Connie, created for the Ledger Syndicate in 1927, is generally regarded as one of the most innovative strips ever created, due to Godwin's beautiful art nouveau style draftsmanship, and the introduction of the first female adventure hero. The strip lasted into the mid-1940s, and, after short stints at both DC and Dell Comics, Godwin created what would become his signature work, Rusty Riley. With gripping scripts by Rod Reed, a veteran comic book adventure writer, Rusty Riley was an instant hit, and remains a favorite of collectors to this day. This particular example shows off Godwin's unerring sense of composition and design to great effect. With some blue-pencil shading in the first panel and in excellent condition, this 19.5" x 6.5" masterpiece will make some lucky collector very happy. The piece is signed by Godwin in the last panel. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
