Born in Maine and studying in Malden, Massachusetts as a young man, Bicknell moved to New York to exhibit at the National Academy of Design in the late 1800?s. This is during a period where the younger Bicknell experienced the American Impressionist movement and prominent artists exhibiting in New York. He later traveled to France to study under the Barbizon influence at the Academie de Julian in Paris. He traveled extensively throughout the French countryside, the Mediterranean and Japan.

Upon returning to the United States in the late 1800?s, he took up residence at the Salmagundi Club in New York. He later instructed at the Carnegie Institute of Technology - where several prominent artists of this time instructed. By the turn of the 20th century, he moved to Old Lyme Connecticut to be close to his good friend Florence Griswold and the Old Lyme Art Colony. The Old Lyme Art Colony was the origination of the American Barbizon School ? the American interpretation of the French Barbizon style. Artists the likes of Hilde Hassam are Old Lyme members and subsequently defined the American Impressionist movement of its day.
