Francis Tansey (b.1959)
RECEDING RED
signed, inscribed and dated [1985] on reverse
acrylic on canvas
213 by 61cm., 84 by 24in.
The paintings of Kilkenny-based artist Francis Tansey have more in common with
the hard-edged abstraction of Mondrian or Barnett Newman than with that of any
Irish artists, except perhaps Michael Ashur or Sean Scully. Upon seeing Tansey’s
work exhibited for the first time in a 1983 NCAD Degree Show, it was Scully who
deemed Tansey one of the most exciting prospects in Irish art. Four years later,
Tansey was featured on the front cover of the Irish Arts Review and profiled
inside by the then Chairman of ROSC, Dr. Patrick J. Murphy. In the article
Murphy described the artist’s technique of using both brushes and rollers to
apply acrylic co-polymer paints in numerous thin glazes until the desired colour
saturation was reached and using masking tape to achieve the crisp edges. The
result, wrote Murphy, was a "sensational interaction of brilliant colours that
dazzle the retina and reverberate with repeated after-images on the mind’s eye"
(Patrick Murphy, ‘The Sensational Paintings of Francis Tansey’, Irish Arts
Review, Vol. 4 No. 1, p. 12). Tansey’s work is in the collections of the Ulster
Museum, the Arts Council of Ireland, Jefferson Smurfit Group, AIB and many other
prominent corporate and private collections.
