Francis Scott Key Autograph Letter Signed.
Francis Scott Key Autograph Letter Signed "FS Key". Three pages with integral address leaf, 8" x 13", Annapolis, Maryland, April 6, 1799. Written to John L. Kerr, a friend and fellow law student, and later a U.S. Senator. Revealing commentary about his love life and the social scene in Annapolis at the turn of the 19th century. "…I have been quite a traveler. I find Annapolis pretty gay, we have a large party tonight…and had a very pleasant one Saturday at Murray's. We have besides two extra belles in town, a Miss Sydebotham from England and Miss Murray who has returned from George Town (where she has been about a year) improved beyond belief. She is really, I think, as handsome if not more so, than either of her sisters. Miss Sydebotham is thought a perfect beauty. I must however differ from most people on this subject. She is a tall, graceful, majestic looking woman which is a kind of beauty that can never captivate me. I prefer the 'blue and laughing eye' of the sportive Queen of Cypress to the noble figure and stern dignity of the Aegis bearing goddess. Amaryllis was once like the former, but now too much resembles the latter to be any longer Amaryllis…I assure I should like prodigiously to continue my late roaming employment & cross the bay, but I find it altogether impossible - the proposal would startle the old fellow I'm sure." In fine condition; usual folds are present; soiling present on fold lines; hole where the wax seal was broken; slightly brittle.
