At the 1913 US Open at the Country Club, Ouimet (1893–1967), a former caddy, changed the perceptions of an entire sport with a stunning triumph that captured the imagination of sports fans across the globe. ALS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, July 8, 1963. Letter of thanks to a collector which accompanied a signed photo (not included). In part: “I received so many congratulatory messages it will be months before I can answer them. This picture was taken at the Beverly Country Club-Chicago-September 1931. I am holding the trophy symbolizing the winning of the Amateur Championship that year.” Ouimet also adds a brief postscript reading: “Hope you can read the signature.” In fine condition. The first letter we have offered from the winner of ‘the greatest game ever played.’
