FMP1 Description

Francis Merritt (1913-2000), ?Lo, the Angel,? original print

Born in 1913 in Danvers, Mass., Merritt studied art at many acclaimed schools such as Vesper George School of Art, San Diego Academy of Fine Arts, Massachusetts School of Art, and Yale University School of Fine Arts. Before settling founding Haystack Art School, he taught for 15 years at the secondary and college level while pursuing a career as a painter-printmaker. He taught printing and drawing at Abbott Academy, Colby Junior College, the Cranbrook Summer Institute, and Bradford Junior College, where he headed the art department.
During his long and distinguished career he was an exhibition juror for annual shows in many states, was a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, and participated in numerous national craft conferences. After a long and fulfilling career in the arts, Merritt died on December 27, 2000.
This original hand printed picture is a unique and compositionally attractive piece. It uses blacks to set an overall dark overtone only to be broken by the harshly contrasting human face and blue spatters around the edges. The intense emotion of the face is brilliantly captured in just two colors-black and white. This stunning picture is appropriately framed in a thin sleek silver frame and matted in a cream colored mat. It is signed and titled in the lower right corner ?Lo-the angel- F.S. Merritt?, and measures a total of 17.25? x 14.5?.
