Signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Jersey (1737–1791) who is also known as the designer of the first official American flag. Partly-printed DS, signed “Fras. Hopkinson,” one page, 12 x 15, December 7, 1789. Order issued to the wardens of the port of Philadelphia, in part: "Application having been made to me by John McShane, Master of the Ship or Vessel, called the Marian lately arrived from Lisbon and now lying in the Port, for a Survey to be made on the said Ship, You, or any two of you, taking your assistance any Ship-Carpenter or other Tradesman, if you shall think it necessary to do so, are hereby directed and required diligently and carefully to survey and examine as well the said Ship." Signed at the conclusion by Hopkinson as judge of the District Court of the United States for Pennsylvania. The survey is recorded on the reverse, noting damage to fifteen chests of tea. Impressively matted and framed alongside an engraved portrait (bearing a facsimile signature) to an overall size of 32 x 26.5, with a window in the backing for viewing the reverse. In fine condition.
