Powers’s personally-owned book, Getting Along in Russian, used to learn the language while serving his prison sentence there. Later printing. NY: Bantam Books, 1959. Softcover, 4.25 x 6.75, 228 pages. Hand-notated by Powers in blue ballpoint, “Temp.,” on a page describing conversion from Fahrenheit to Celsius. Autographic condition: very good to fine, with creasing to covers. Book condition: G+/None. Trade paperback with black illustrated wraps; creasing to covers, mostly along edges; tear at right corner of spinetail; crack to center of textblock, with corresponding crease down spine; slightly yellowed and soiled. While these features are generally considered flaws, in this case they indicate constant use by Powers, adding to the significance of the book. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Gary Powers, Jr.
