Francine Gravel (b. 1944)
Canadian Painter, Printmaker, and Poet

Francine Gravel is a celebrated Canadian artist whose work captures the whimsy and depth of human emotion through vibrant, theatrical compositions. Born in Montréal in 1944, she studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Albert Dumouchel and Pierre Ayot, earning a diploma in painting and printmaking in 1965. Her artistic journey continued with postgraduate studies in Antwerp, Belgium, and an M.A. from the University of Calgary in 1975.

Gravel's paintings are renowned for their lyrical quality, often drawing inspiration from music, dance, and mythology. Her use of layered oil and acrylic techniques evokes a dreamlike atmosphere, inviting viewers into a world where reality and fantasy intertwine. This distinctive style reflects influences from Egyptian, Mexican, and Medieval art traditions.
