It is the work of a young girl in whom I am much interested…she and her mother were friends of President Garfield whom I knew well and admired greatly. Under the new administration her mother has lost the office Garfield obtained for her…She has written a good many little things for childrens papers which pay very small sums. So she finally came to me for advice. She lives in Georgetown—that interesting and left-behind place—and seems to have studied the negro character rather closely."
