Frances Hodgkins, mounted watercolour, 'Maori Women collecting water by a pool in a village landscape', signed mono signature, indistinctly inscribed in pencil verso 'Hodgkins 16 White Rock....', 26.5 cms x 22 cms Frances Hodgkins is well recorded for her figure and landscape work and left New Zealand in 1900 for England. She had no formal art training and yet became the first female member of the training staff at the famous Paris art school, Colarossi's. She travelled and painted in Europe and also in Africa and the Middle East. Her work may be found in numerous national collections, and the Tate Gallery has a number of her works. She lived in London initially before removing to St. Ives in Cornwall. She died at Dorchester, Dorset in 1947.
